SynopsisSkyhigh 2 The Gate of Rancor is for those souls who died unwillingly、 such as through an accident or murder. The souls who approach this gate are given three paths to choose from: to accept their death and await reincarnation in heaven、 to deny their death and wander the earth as a ghost、 or to curse a living person to death and be condemned to hell. A woman named Izuko serves as the gatekeeper. Her identity is unknown. Souls who have met various ends approach the gate and are given the choice of three paths by Izuko. The episodes revolve around souls who choose which path to take after being shown why and how they died . Skyhigh 2 is based on a manga by Tsutomu Takahashi that was serialized by Shueisha in Weekly Jump starting in 2001. The first season of the TV series ran for eight episodes on the TV Asahi network from January 2003. The second season also ran for eight episodes、 premiering in January 2004. Owing to the popularity of the first season、 a film adaptation was released in 2003、 before the second season. Yumiko Shaku played the leading role、 Izuko、 throughout both seasons. The series is comprised of standalone episodes each revolving around a different character. In the first season、 the only character who can see Izuko is Shokichi、 the son of Daikichi Yomoyama (played by Hisahiro Ogura)、 who runs a recycling business. In the second season、 Teruo Amano (played by Reo Morimoto)、 the principal of Nijinomachi Kindergarten、 is able to confirm Izuko. Izuko’s signature phrase、 “oikinasai” (off you go)、 for seeing off souls at the Gate of Rancor became popular among the younger generation at the time. Produced by Amuse and Toei、 the series featured many star-studded guest appearances.
