Synopsis | Kyaputen Tsubasa、 Captain TsubasaTsubasa Ozora is a boy who loves soccer、 and has recently transferred to Nankatsu Elementary School in Shizuoka Prefecture. Rather than help his parents with the unpacking、 he goes to play soccer in the town’s soccer field. There he meets Genzo Wakabayashi、 a prodigy goalkeeper from Shutetsu Elementary School and later becomes Tsubasa’s rival. Driven by a feeling of rivalry against Genzo and his goalkeeping skills、 Tsubasa challenges Genzo to a soccer dual. Roberto Hongo、 a former professional soccer player who used to play in Brazil’s national team、 watches the dual between the two boys、 is fascinated by Tsubasa’s talent、 and becomes the coach of Nankatsu Elementary School’s soccer team. After that、 Tsubasa joins Nankatsu’s soccer team. He and his team play in the All Japan Youth Football Championship and、 after defeating various rivals in the elimination league and finals tournament、 become the champions. Tsubasa later has a penalty shootout with Genzo、 who is scheduled to move to West Germany、 and loses. But the two vow to meet again in cheerful spirit and deepen their friendship.Three years have passed since the All Japan Youth Football Championship、 and Tsubasa has become a 9th grader at Nanakatsu Junior High School. Tsubasa and his team play in and win the Shizuoka Prefectural Tournament to gain the right to play in the All Japan Junior High School Football Championship 、 a tournament to be held in the last summer for the junior high school team. In the All Japan Junior High School Football Championship、 the team struggles against many talented players from around the country、 but Tsubasa and his teammates fight hard and manage to advance to the final. In the final match against Toho Gakuen、 Tsubasa confronts his rival Kojiro Hyuga、 who has been top scorer in the All Japan Championship for two consecutive years. The match ends in a draw、 and Nankatsu Junior High School and Toho Gakuen win joint first place.The series、 along with Tsubasa’s famous words “The ball is my friend、” became popular among not only boys who liked soccer but also fans worldwide.A total of 128 episodes were broadcast from October 13、 1983 to March 27、 1986、 generating a soccer craze among elementary school children nationwide.
