| Synopsis | Sangokushi、 Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms Sangokushi is based on an epic historical novel depicting the formation and destruction of the Three Kingdoms of Wei、 Wu、 and Shu that for a time made up ancient China. The story starts in the year 180 AD. China is in a state of chaos: famine is rampant、 bandits roam freely、 and politicians are corrupt. The Yellow Turban rebels who rose to the occasion end up behaving like bandits too、 massacring and pillaging from the people.Appalled by these deeds、 Ryubi Gentoku、 a kind young man who was born to a poor farmer family、 makes a pact of brotherhood with Kanu Uncho、 a general who wields a large blade pike、 called Green Dragon Crescent Blade. The third brother to join them is Chohi Yokutoku. Though a brave general who obeys Ryubi and Kanu、 Chohi is also sentimental and easily moved to tears. The three brothers form a voluntary army in order to put down the Yellow Turban Rebellion.Female characters who did not appear in the original manga by Mitsuteru Yokoyama、 such as Koran、 were added in the animation series. Koran became Ryubi’s disciple and、 later、 his wife. Various female characters were created in a similar fashion to add some glamor to the story. The series depicts the intense battles between competing heroic and brave figures aiming to dominate the whole states across the vast Chinese continent、 It also depicts human nature、 such as brotherly love、 friendship、 and loyalty、 of the individuals involved in these battles. The animation series started in 1991 and ended with episode 47. Therefore、 it does not extend to the period later covered in the movie Red Cliff. Thanks to the animation series、 the manga Sangokushi by Mitsuteru Yokoyama won the Japan Cartoonists Association Excellence Award in 1991. |
