SynopsisKosoku Esper A group of Espers prepare to land on Earth after the destruction of their planet by the Giron、 an alien species. But just before they land、 they accidentally crash into the Azumas、 who are enjoying a hot balloon ride. Only Hikaru、 the family’s only son、 survives the accident. In atonement for this、 the Espers decide to revive Hikaru’s dead parents by possessing their bodies and to raise Hikaru themselves. However、 the Giron come to Earth in search of their next target. The Espers help Hikaru’s uncle complete the reinforced armor that he has been developing in the Light Wave Energy Laboratory、 and then give the armor to Hikaru、 who fights against the Giron. In this way、 they cooperate in the effort to save Earth. Equipped in the completed reinforced armor、 Hikaru takes on the mission to protect Earth as Kosoku Esper.Kosoku Esper was a rare case where a mascot created for Toshiba-related commercials in 1964、 predating the appearance of Sazae-san、 was simultaneously adapted into a manga and a TV series. The manga by Riji Asano was first serialized in Kobunsha’s Shonen in 1966、 and then starting in August 1967、 a TV series ran for six months on Nippon TV. Kiyotaka Mitsugi、 who was still a child actor at the time、 starred as Esper. The screenplay was written by Susumu Takaku、 who later became a leading screenwriter for tokusatsu and animation series、 under the pseudonym “Kazuo Ikeda.” Masaru Igami、 who was already a leading screenwriter for children’s tokusatsu shows、 and Tatsuo Tamura、 who later became a successful anime scriptwriter、 also participated in the production. The manga series ended with the conclusion of the TV series、 but Reiji Matsumoto began serializing another Kosoku Esper series with a new storyline in 1968. The storyline is completely different from the aforementioned TV series and first manga.
