Synopsis | Turn to the Gold Medal Ayuko is a cheerful girl who loves swimming. But one day she causes a boat capsizing accident、 which makes her afraid of water. This makes it difficult for her continue her club activities. Under the guidance of Shinsuke Kuroki、 the young man who saved Ayuko from the boat accident、 Ayuko overcomes her fear of water. Once she learns that Shinsuke is a swimmer with a promising future、 she herself sets a goal of winning a gold medal in swimming at the Munich Olympics. Going through rigorous training and、 at times、 struggling with her relationships with rivals and those around her、 Ayuko develops various techniques、 such as the “flying fish turn、” and wins a series of tournaments. Later、 Ayuko participates in the Olympic preliminaries. Despite having an injured ankle、 she wins with her “air rotation turn、” which involves jumping on one foot、 finally securing her place in the Munich Olympics. Since the leading actress、 Tomoko Umeda、 was a good swimmer、 she performed the scenes herself.Turn to the Gold Medal is based on the manga of the same name by Michiko Hosono and Yukio Tsuda. The manga was serialized by Kodansha in the manga magazine Shojo Friend from April 1969 to May 1970、 and was reprinted in the same magazine in conjunction with the release of the TV series. The TV series was a collaborative production between Toei and Fuji TV、 running in multiple seasons from July 6、 1970 to September 27、 1971. It garnered greater popularity as expectations rose for the Munich Olympic Games、 which were later held in 1972. The screenplay was written by Yasuo Tanami、 as well as Tatsuo Tamura and Mitsuru Majima. Yasuo Tanami also wrote the theme song. |
