Synopsis | Sanshiro SugataIt is Tokyo in the era of the Meiji Restoration. Sanshiro Sugata、 a young wannabe jiu-jitsu practitioner on a training journey、 performs tsujinage (challenging a fight with passerby on the street) to test his strength every night. But one night、 he meets judoist Shogoro Yano and tastes his first defeat.Captivated by Shogoro’s new technique of judo、 which is an amazing improvement of conventional jiu-jitsu、 Sanshiro applies to be an apprentice、 and Shogoro later accepts it. At Shogoro’s place、 Sanshiro spends every day training hard under his master’s expectations and develops his skills remarkably、 although sometimes getting Shogoro in trouble. One day、 Sanshiro happens to get to know Otomi、 a beautiful and lovely girl、 when he mends the strap of her geta clog. He begins to be deeply attracted to her. This fateful encounter、 however、 makes Sanshiro confront a sever reality as if it tested him.Otomi turns out to be the only daughter of jiu-jitsu practitioner Hansuke Murai、 who is Sanshiro’s opponent in the coming match he prepares for.How will Sanshiro try to develop such a strange relationship with Otomi? With his feelings wavering due to his love for Otomi、 Sanshiro devotes his adolescence and life to judo. He grows up greatly to be a tough and strong man through various challenges and matches with strong opponents facing him.Sanshiro Sugata was produced as an anime television special based on the popular novel written by Tsuneo Tomita、 and broadcast as the second of the animated literature series on the Nissei Family Special program in 1981.
