SynopsisJudo IcchokusenThe protagonist、 Naoya Ichijo、 loses his judoka father at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He is discovered by another judoka、 Shusaku Kuruma、 who recognizes Naoya’s natural talent、 and decides to pursue judo. In the process、 he fights against some of the best judoka from all over Japan、 learns his master’s technique “Jigoku guruma 、” and creates his own special move named “Ebi guruma 、” while growing up to be a top judoka. This “spokon (sports drama)” series fascinated the viewers. Kenichi Sakuragi、 in his first starring role、 was cast as the protagonist Naoya、 and Kyoko Yoshizawa was chosen to play the heroine、 a role that also marked her rise to fame. A young Masaomi Kondo also appeared as one of the main rivals、 and he won the approval of many fans for his eccentric scenes、 such as playing the piano with his feet. A total of 92 episodes were produced by Toei and broadcast on TV from June 1969 to April 1971. The original manga was written by Ikki Kajiwara、 and drawn by Shinji Nagashima and Yuzuru Saito. It was published in Weekly Shonen King from 1969 to 1971. The TV drama series featured many outlandish techniques、 which did not seem to be favored by true judokas. However、 the series also triggered a judo craze among children at the time、 so much so that it is undeniable that it produced future Olympic judokas among those who watched it. Furthermore、 it was also developed into transformation poses for tokusatsu superhero shows and signature moves for Kamen Rider X. The theme song for the TV series was performed by Kenichi Sakuragi、 who also played the protagonist.
