| Synopsis | Phantom Agents The Phantom Agents are descendants of Iga-ryu and Koga-ryu ninjas who belong to the Akebono Organization、 which was formed to protect the world from an evil organization known as Black Flag. The world’s peace and justice are upheld by this team of around 10 ninjas、 each of whom leverages his or her ninjutsu and other abilities. The team leader is codenamed Gekko.Phantom Agents is based on a manga created by manga artist Tatsuo Yoshida、 the first president of Tatsunoko Production、 which later produced Mach GoGoGo and Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. The manga was originally set during WWII、 but the story was adapted to a “contemporary” setting to match the tastes of a postwar TV audience in the 1960s. Every member of the Phantom Agents is given a codename including the kanji for “moon” (which can be read in various ways in Japanese): Getsurin、 Meigetsu、 Tsukikage、 Mikazuki、 Yuzuki、 and so on. The members Mikazuki and Yuzuki are female ninja. Although called ninja、 they wear leather jackets and helmets and are armed with samurai swords and pistols.Phantom Agents is based on a manga that was serialized in Weekly Shonen King from 1964 to 1966、 which was later released in four tankobon volumes. The TV series was aired simultaneously on the Fuji TV network from January 1964 to March 1966. Although themed around ninjas、 the series incorporated various elements of contemporary drama because the main director、 Keinosuke Tsuchiya、 aimed to create a Japanese version of Combat. These elements that matched the times contributed to the tokusatsu action series’ popularity. Tatsuo Tamura、 Susumu Takaku、 and Keisuke Fujikawa、 screenwriters who later became masters of their trade in the animation industry、 were involved in the production. The music was composed by Chumei Watanabe、 one of the leading creators of Showa-era anime music. |
