| Synopsis | Haikara-san ga Toru、 Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss ModernThe year is 1918. The protagonist Benio Hanamura grows to become a tomboy: give her a bamboo sword、 and she would beat anyone in a fight. One day、 a man named Shinobu Ijuin appears before her. Benio was betrothed to Shinobu back in her grandparents’ time. Born to a Japanese father and German mother、 Shinobu is the heir to a countship as well as being a second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army. Offended by the fact that her parents arranged her marriage、 Benio does not accept Shinobu. She reluctantly moves into the Ijuin residence to get prepared for married life、 but tries very hard to make Shinobu hate her. Over time、 Shinobu grows fond of Benio for her high resolve、 while Benio also grows fond of Shinobu for his kindness and sincerity. However、 one day、 Shinobu gets transferred to Kokura due to an incident caused by Benio、 and he is later sent to fight in Siberia. Later、 news of Shinobu’s death in battle reaches Benio、 who has been waiting for his return at the Ijuin residence. Benio then works hard as an office lady to protect the Ijuin family. Eventually、 she learns that Shinobu is still alive、 and the two are wed at last. The original manga by Waki Yamato was serialized in Shojo Friend from 1975 to 1977、 winning the 1st Kodansha Manga Award for the shoujo category in 1977. It was adapted into a drama series for KTV in 1979、 featuring Takarazuka Revue students in the cast. Later、 in 1987、 Toei created a live-action film in which Yoko Minamino、 who was massively popular as one of Japan’s top idols、 played her second ever leading role (she first starred in Sukeban Deka). The theme song “Haikara-san ga Toru” became the top hit in the Oricon charts. The manga was also adapted into an anime series by Nihon Animation、 airing on TV Asahi from June 1978 to March 1979. In 2017、 a two-part anime film was released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Waki Yamato’s career. |
