SynopsisAntique: The Western Cake Shop Eiji Kanda is a professional boxer with phenomenal talent、 and he is expected to have a promising future by those around him. However、 he is forced into early retirement as a result of his detached retinas. Overcome by despair、 he disappears. One night、 he comes across a pastry shop called Antique that is open up to 2 o'clock at night. Eiji tries one their cakes in the vintage-style shop、 which is decorated with numerous stylish antiques. Amazed by how tasty it is、 he urges the shop to hire him as an apprentice pastry chef、 and gets the job. Antique is owned by Keiichiro Tachibana、 the son of a wealthy conglomerate-owning family and a former executive at a large company. Another staff member is the genius pastry chef Yusuke Ono. He has a mysterious past、 having being fired by a number of bakeries due to his handsome appearance、 which causes both men and women to fall in love with him. The shop’s customers are mysterious too. Working as an apprentice to Yusuke、 Eiji interacts with customers who each have their own story.The series is based on Antique Bakery by manga artist Fumi Yoshinaga. The manga was serialized in the bimonthly magazine Wings、 published by Shinshokan、 from 1999 to 2002. The animation series ran for 11 episodes on the Fuji TV network in October through December 2001. The script was developed by Yoshikazu Okada、 who is known for works such as Churasan and Hiyokko from NHK’s Renzoku Terebi Shosetsu series. The series featured a star-studded cast、 with Hideaki Takizawa as Eiji Kanda、 Kippei Shiina as Keiichiro Tachibana、 and Naohito Fujiki as Yusuke Ono. Kippei Shiina won the Best Supporting Actor Award in the 31st Television Drama Academy Awards. It won various other awards、 including a best picture award.
