Synopsis | Chugakusei Nikki、 Diary of Middle Schoolers Chugakusei Nikki is a long-running school drama series that was broadcast from 1972 until March 2012. The series was originally called Chugakusei Jiro、 which was broadcast from April 1962、 and has since been renamed several times leading up to the current iteration. The NHK Nagoya Broadcasting Station—Nagoya is where the series is set from the beginning in Chugakusei Jiro— was in charge of research and production of the show. This drama series centers on junior high school students. A single theme is told in one or several episodes. The junior high school students who appear in the series are referred to as “nikkisei (nikki student)”. From 1990 onward、 the series began depicting the daily lives of junior high school students that reflect the trends at the time as well as presenting the problems occurring in schools. From 2003 onward、 the content of the series was completely changed by appointing younger scriptwriters、 and many serious elements were interwoven into episodes、 including real concerns of adolescents in their daily lives and the breakdown of families that students experience. The production team held open auditions for the roles of nikkisei、 rather than limiting the call to professional talents、 and insisted on casting actual junior high school students. Moreover、 in order to reproduce the school life of junior high school students and the problems that arise in the field of education、 questionnaires and individual interviews were conducted with nikkisei as well as with actual teachers and university professors. Scripts and screenplays were written based on these interviews. These factors made the TV drama series more akin to a documentary program. In 2013、 Series Tenkosei: Boku to Kimi no Melody—broadcast on September 2、 2011—won in the Best Drama Series category at the International Emmy Awards、 which are given by the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences— a membership based organization comprising of members from 50 countries and 500 broadcasting organizations outside the U.S. Many actors have emerged from this show over the past 40 years. |
