SynopsisThe Man Who Wanted to Be UltramanTsuburaya Productions、 during the production of a new Ultraman film、 decides to use a large number of CG images to appeal to not only a Japanese audience but also a global one. This transition makes it impossible to continue creating traditional tokusatsu (special effects) works. Hiroshi Asami、 the longest-serving craftsman who has spent 20 years creating suit monsters and studying their movements、 is reassigned to perform inside an Ultraman suit for a theme park attraction. Just before this decision、 Toru、 a boy who is a passionate Ultraman fan、 and his mother had often visited the tokusatsu studio、 deepening the friendship with Hiroshi. Therefore、 this sudden career shift deeply disappointed Hiroshi. This story focuses on the human drama of a special effects technician who is obsessed with monsters but clumsy at living his life、 depicting the sorrow and hope of the staff tossed about by the era of the changing media industry. The production was handled by Tsuburaya Productions and Kinoshita Productions. The tokusatsu (special effects) segments utilized archived footage previously filmed by Tsuburaya Productions. The tokusatsu scenes feature the Ultra Brothers from the golden age of tokusatsu、 including the first-generation Ultraman、 Ultra Seven、 and Ultraman Taro. For the script、 Mamoru Sasaki、 who had been involved since the Ultraman series、 reportedly placed great importance on the perspective of Shinichi Ichikawa、 who had been involved since the launch of the Ultra series. The drama aired in TBS’s Monday Drama Special time slot on October 18、 1993. Tetsuya Takeda、 known for the Kinpachi-Sensei (Mr. Kinpachi)” series、 played the role of Hiroshi Asami、 portraying the character with elements of pathos and comedy.
