| Synopsis | Ganbare Genki; Genki、 The Boy ChampGenki Horiguchi was raised by his single father and professional boxer Hideki Horiguchi. Dreaming to become a strong boxer like his beloved father、 “Shark” Horiguchi、 he first takes up boxing at age five.Hideki distanced himself from boxing for a while after Genki was born、 but later resumes his professional boxing career. However、 he passes away following a fierce fight with a young genius boxer named Kenji Seki.After his father’s death、 Genki is taken in by his wealthy maternal grandparents and leads a comfortable life. But he begins wanting to realize his dream of defeating Seki for his late father、 who died before fulfilling his goal、 and becoming world champion.Genki secretly continues his boxing training despite his grandparents’ disapproval. Following his encounter with former Japan student champion Eiji Mishima、 and with the encouragement from Yuko Ashikawa、 an elementary school teacher who looks just like Genki’s late mother、 Genki goes to live in Tokyo alone immediately after graduating from junior high school、 where he trains hard every day.Genki、 who has grown stronger、 goes on to become a professional boxer to fulfill his dream of becoming champion by defeating Seki、 who has become world champion.Genki、 The Boy Champ was created by Toei Animation、 with 35 episodes running on the Fuji TV network from 1980 to 1981.It is based on a passionate boxing manga by Yu Koyama、 known for works such as Azumi and Oi! Ryoma、 and was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1976 to 1981. |
