| Synopsis | Ore wa Chokkaku、 I Am ChokkakuThe story is set in the late Edo period. Chokkaku Ishigaki was born to a low-ranking but strict samurai family. Taught from his father that “bushido is about being upright without deviating、” Chokkaku grows to become a boy who passionately adheres to this bushido spirit.Chokkaku is admitted to Meirin-kan、 a prestigious academy that gathers pupils from noble and illustrious families. Although Chokkaku joins the academy with high ambitions、 Meirin-kan is nothing like what it used to be. Originally founded for the purpose of cultivating the arts of war and peace as well as serving as model for others、 Meirin-kan has now been reduced to a place filled with greedy people who want to use it to promote their own status、 fame、 and advancement.Chokkaku gets into trouble soon after joining the academy––he falls out with students from the elite class、 including Shintaro Go、 leader of Meirin-kan’s delinquents、 and Terumasa Hojo、 the grandson of a feudal lord’s chief retainer. However、 Chokkaku overcomes these challenges with his inherent cheerful、 carefree nature and upright character inherited from his father.Chokkaku never deviates and keeps pushing forward、 encouraging those around him to consider what it means to be a samurai and what it means to be ambitious. This true samurai inspires those around him to change and helps restore Meirin-kan to its desired state.I Am Chokkaku is based on a historical comedy manga series by Yu Koyama、 known for works such as Azumi and Oi! Ryoma. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1973 to 1976、 and a total of 36 episodes aired on the Fuji TV network starting in 1991. |
