| Synopsis | Chojiku Yosai MakurosuIn 1999、 a gigantic space battleship suddenly comes to Earth from space and crashes there. This incident makes humanity acknowledge the existence of aliens; in order to deal with this threat from space、 humanity goes about to unite the world. After analyzing the crashed battleship’s unknown technology and developing civilization、 humanity names the restored battleship the Macross (Makurosu).After some time、 on the day of the ceremony to celebrate the first flight of the Macross into space、 an army of alien giants named “Zentradi” appear、 triggering a war between humanity and the aliens.Subsequently、 a town was built within the Macross、 in which many military personnel and civilians led their daily lives even during the war. Hikaru Ichijo、 a civilian acrobatic pilot、 gets embroiled in the fighting and meets Lynn Minmay、 and the two fall in love.In order to protect people like Minmay、 Hikaru joins the army and becomes a pilot of the variable fighter “Valkyrie”. Meanwhile、 Minmay becomes a pop idol singer、 singing for those who are injured in the war. As the war rages on、 the true identity of the Zentradi is revealed: they were a race created through genetic manipulation and knew no other way of life than to fight.While fighting with the Macross、 the Zentradi army hears Minmay’s “songs”、 gets a culture shock、 is aroused by “culture”、 joins forces with the earthlings、 shoots down the fleet’s flagship、 and wins the day. Although the series was centered around fighting、 the idea that “songs=culture” could be used as a weapon created a novel world-view. With pop music running in the background even during battle scenes、 and the birth of a special pop idol in the person of Lynn Minmay、 the series had a big impact on subsequent Macross series. Macross series still continue to be made、 centered on the idea of “songs” which is unique to the series. |
