Synopsis | Monkey Monkey is based on Journey to the West、 a classic Chinese novel written around the 16th century. The series was released in the wake of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China、 which was signed in 1978 to resolve post-war disputes. It was one of the various productions that helped spread this classic Chinese novel among Japanese children after the treaty. Among these productions、 Monkey was the largest in scale. Produced by Nippon TV and International Television Films and starring Masaaki Sakai、 it premiered in October 1978. Although only loosely based on the original novel、 the basic story that revolves around three yokai、 Monkey (aka Son Goku)、 Pigsy (aka Cho Hakkai)、 and Sandy (aka Sa Gojo)、 guarding Tripitaka (aka Sanzo Hoshi) on a journey to India is the same. Many original features were added to the TV series to cater it to a Japanese audience. Masaaki Sakai played the leading character、 Monkey、 while Toshiyuki Nishida played Pigsy、 Shiro Kishibe played Sandy、 and legendary actress Masako Natsume played Tripitaka. The band Godiego rose to fame with the opening theme、 “Monkey Magic.” The screenplay was written by Mamoru Sasaki、 Kei Tasaka、 James Miki、 Hirokazu Fuse、 Motomu Furuta、 and others who had been active since the early days of TV broadcasting and who played an essential role in the production of period drama series and TV series by commercial broadcasting companies at the time. The long-established Tsuburaya Productions conducted the tokusatsu filming. In 2006、 Fuji TV released a new series based on the Monkey series that starred Masaaki Sakai. Shingo Katori played Son Goku、 Teruyoshi Uchimura (Utchan Nanchan) played Sa Gojo、 Atsushi Ito played Cho Hakkai、 and Eri Fukazu played Sanzo Hoshi. The new series was written by Yuji Sakamoto. This established the format of TV series adaptations of Journey to the West in Japan. The 1978 version was also broadcast in the UK、 Australia、 New Zealand、 and Hong Kong. |
