SynopsisSazae-sanThe Isono Family lives in a quiet residential quarter in Tokyo、 the father、 Namihei、 mother、 Fune、 eldest daughter、 Sazae、 eldest son、 Katsuo、 and second daughter、 Wakame、 and leads a lively life with the people around them. Sazae later marries Masuo Fukuda、 and their first son、 Tarao、 is born. Sazae-san became popular as a slice-of-life cartoon portraying the lifestyle of common people in the Showa period through a three-generation family. The story was first animated in 1969、 but was a live-action dramatization before that、 starring Chiemi Eri. Through the spread of TV、 the story became widespread among families with children. In the animated version、 annual events and other minor events in everyday life in Japan continue to be illustrated with a soft touch、 keeping a general sense of Showa life. For example、 door-to-door tradesmen、 who are now rarely seen、 and engawa、 a veranda-like porch、 which is almost gone now、 still exist in the world of Sazae-san. Family-like neighbors、 and close relationships with the family of Norisuke、 a nephew who lives nearby、 remain in the world of Sazae-san、 even though they are not seen so much now.Machiko Hasegawa、 the original author、 passed away on May 27、 1992、 and received the People’s Honor Award in July 1992. The animated version of Sazae-san is still broadcast. The theme song has never changed since the program was first broadcast、 which is rare for current anime. This program has become an anime that even generations who have not watched Sazae-san are very likely to know the opening part of the song、 “Chasing a stray cat holding a fish in its mouth…” Sazae-san will continue to be supported by many generations.
