Synopsis

Moero Atakku, Moero! AttackJun Kojika lives with her father on a farm in Hokkaido. She has been trained hard in volleyball by her father since childhood. When Jun learns that her mother, who she was told had died, used to be a volleyball player, she transfers to her mother’s alma mater, Shirafuji Academy high school, in Tokyo to become like her. There, Jun learns that her mother was Japan’s best ace attacker. Jun goes through many things at the academy: rivalry with a student called Akane Nango from Hanada Academy, fall outs with Sachi Yazaki, Ayako Oyama, and Michiko Suzuki who start harassing Jun soon after she joins the volleyball club, and major blunders during matches due to her own self-conceit. Despite these setbacks, Jun’s sincere attitude earns her the trust of her teammates and even her rivals through volleyball. Jun comes up with a special technique called Higuma Otoshi, and is chosen to play in inter‐high school competitions and as a member of Japan’s national team. Moero Atakku is a TV series that revolves around how Jun and the other school girls become talented volleyball players.Developed by Shotaro Ishinomori and created by Toei, the series aired from January 1979 to July 1980. In the initial phase of production, the girls’ goal was to play in the Moscow Olympics, which was held in 1980. However, due to a boycott by the US and other Western countries, the ultimate goal of playing in the Olympics no longer existed in reality. Therefore, the series’ focus turned to depicting Jun’s and the other girls’ passion and sincere attitude toward volleyball. In part due to this, the series was broadcast in China in the 1980s under a title literally translating as “volleyball captain” and garnered huge popularity. Yumiko Araki, who played Jun Kojika, is hugely popular among Chinese fans even today.
