Synopsis

Chako Nechan (My Sister Chako)This is the fourth installment of the Chako-chan series. As Harumi Yomo, who had played the lead role as a boyish and energetic girl since the first installment titled Chako-chan Shacho (President Chako-chan), grew up to have a more feminine figure, the series reached a turning point. The producer introduced a more mischievous and precocious younger brother to make this show more active and dynamic. Centering on a two-parent household with two children representing the typical salaried worker’s family of the mid-Showa era, the story depicts the daily lives of children at that time. The main cast remained the same as the previous installment, Chako-chan Hi! with Haruo Sato and Toshie Takada continuing in the roles of the parents. A new member was Ken-ichi, played by kindergartner Yasuyuki Miyawaki. He joined the family as the young brother of Chako who had been an only child of the family. Each episode is self-contained, depicting children’s daily lives particularly focusing on Ken-ichi. One notable episode features a childish misunderstanding: after taking an adult’s silly joke seriously, Ken-ichi becomes convinced that his real parents are elsewhere and runs away from home, causing an uproar.Produced by TBS and Kokusai Eigasha changelessly, the series aired for one year from April 1967 to March 1968. It consisted of 52 episodes, broadcast every Thursday from 19:30 to 20:00 on TBS. The theme song was performed by Yoshiko Fujita who later became known for the anime Ikkyu-san, and she also appeared in the drama. This installment marked the conclusion of the three-part Chako-chan Series and a transition to the subsequent Ken-chan Series for a new attempt of the long-running program. With the introduction of Ken-ichi, the show successfully expanded its audience even further among children.
