Synopsis

Kaito Rarero (Phantom Thief Rarero)The phantom thief Rarero, who suddenly arrived from the fictional planet Malaria, causes turmoil on Earth by using magic to steal various items. By chanting the spell Bundora~, he can steal anything; however, most of the things he steals turn out to be completely useless. Meanwhile, Popopo, a serious detective, has come to Earth from the same planet to chase Rarero and prevent the thefts. Together with a group of boys and girls led by Kenta Nakagami, the three parties find themselves embroiled in various incidents. This work is a black-and-white television drama with 24 episodes in total, which aired on the Nippon TV network from October 7, 1968, to March 24, 1969. The scriptwriting team included Masaki Tsuji, known for writing the scripts of Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), and Masaru Igami. Masaki Tsuji also wrote the lyrics for the theme song, Kaito Rarero no Uta (The Song of Phantom Thief Rarero). Notably, the then-popular manzai comedy duo Aozora Haruo and Akio were cast, with Akio playing the role of Rarero and Haruo playing Popopo. Consequently, the interactions between Rarero and Popopo fully utilized the duo’s comedic style as it was, and they also performed the theme song. The original novel, Kaito Rarero (Phantom Thief Rarero) by Ichiro Kano, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine. While the novel depicted Rarero as a highly capable thief who could steal anything, this adaptation incorporated the manzai comedy style into the acting of both Rarero and Popopo, entertaining TV viewers more and offering a different kind of charm than the original novel. After the television adaptation, a manga version by George Akiyama was serialized in the magazine Bokura.
