Synopsis
Akuma-kun (Devil Boy)Shingo Yamada is a boy genius born with a mole that occurs in one in ten thousand people on his forehead. He is asked by a sage-like old man named Faust to summon a demon to fight the phantoms and monsters infesting the world. Following Faust’s instructions, Shingo summons the demon Mephisto. Initially, Mephisto is not willing to serve a child and simply refuses to obey him. However, Shingo uses a magical ocarina given to him by Faust to inflict pain when Mephisto ignores an order, while also offering him his favorite treat—chocolate. Through this methodology, they eventually become a good team. The incantation used to summon Mephisto, Eloim, Essaim, frugativi et appelavi, became immensely popular among children at that time. The original work is created by Shigeru Mizuki, the leading artist of manga featuring supernatural creatures, known for such works as GeGeGe no Kitaro (Kitaro of the Graveyard) and Kappa no Sanpei (Sanpei, a Water Sprite). The series first appeared in 1963 as a rental book, published by Tokosha. In 1966, it officially became a commercial manga in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Akuma-kun was adapted into a TV drama for the first time of his works and was thus produced entirely in black and white at that time. Having survived World War II, Mizuki also created many manga works based on his war experiences in the South Pacific. Then, Akuma-kun was first adapted into anime by Toei Animation in 1989, which was later adapted into a theatrical film. During his lifetime, Mizuki received numerous honors, including the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1991 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 2003, as well as many manga awards. Today, the Shigeru Mizuki Museum is open in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture, and in 2010, he was designated as a Person of Cultural Merit.
