Synopsis
Be-Bop-High SchoolHiroshi Kato and Toru Nakama, a pair of students who repeated a year at Aitoku High School, are undefeated in fights, but they have a soft spot for the school idol, Kyoko Izumi. As such, they lead a typical delinquent school life, often smoking cigarettes together on the school rooftop. One day, a fight that they call extracurricular activities triggers a confrontation with students from Totsuka Fisheries High School. Called a yakuza training institute, the notorious Totsuka Fisheries High School is ruled by the formidable brothers Tatsuo (nicknamed Hebi-ji, hebi literally means “snake”) and Torao (Neko-ji, neko literally means “cat”). Seething at the confrontation, the brothers target Hiroshi and Toru. Moreover, they kidnap Kyoko and forcibly cut her hair. Enraged by this act, Hiroshi and Toru challenge Totsuka Fisheries High School to a fight and successfully defeat the brothers after a fierce battle. The series was based on the manga by Kazuhiro Kiuchi. This manga was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 1983 to 2003 and gained explosive popularity, particularly among junior high and high school students. It became a cornerstone of the so-called Yankee (delinquent) genre, winning the 12th Kodansha Manga Award in the General Category. Later, the live-action film series, starring Kojirow Shimizu as Hiroshi and Toru Nakamura as Toru, became a smash hit. This series marked Toru Nakamura's acting debut, and his stage name, which happened to be identical to his character’s name, became widely recognized as well. All the screenplays for the film series were written by Machiko Nasu, known for engaging in famous titles such as Seibu Keisatsu. Beyond the films, this work was adapted into various media, including OVAs and TV dramas, becoming a long-beloved classic.
