Synopsis
Astros Baseball TeamAt 9:09:09 PM on September 9, 2005, nine shooting stars streaked across the night sky, and nine professional baseball players witnessed them. Among them was Atsuya Furuta. Chasing the information on the long-lost baseball team Astro Kyudan, he visited an elderly man named J. Shuro who lived in the Philippines to ask about the team. Shuro said that the team was born from the wish of Eiji Sawamura, the legendary Giants pitcher who died in combat during World War II. The story shifts back to 1972. In order to pursue Sawamura’s ambitious dream to build the world’s strongest Astro Kyudan team and challenge the Major Leagues in the United States, Shuro begins searching for the Astro Nine—nine superhumans with ball-shaped birthmarks on their bodies. Starting with his encounter with Kyuichi Uno with such a birthmark on his arm, Shuro finds the superhumans one after another and struggles immensely to recruit them for the team. The TV series was based on the manga Astro Kyudan (Astros Baseball Team) written by Shiro Tozaki and illustrated by Norihiro Nakajima. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from Issue 39 in 1972 to Issue 26 in 1976. Decades later, it was adapted into a TV drama and first broadcast as part of Perfect Choice on July 25, 2005, and later on the TV Asahi network on August 10. The TV adaptation sets the beginning of the first episode and the entire final episode in the year 2005 to match its broadcast era. The cast featured an impressive lineup of talent, including Atsuya Furuta appearing as himself, Kazushige Nagashima as Eiji Sawamura, and Sonny Chiba as Shuro. The scripts were written by Koen Kyodai, a writing unit consisting of Katsuhiko Manabe and Yoshinobu Kamo.
