Synopsis
Dr. Koto Shinryojo 2006, Dr. Coto’s Clinic 2006Dr. Coto’s Clinic 2006 is a sequel to Dr. Coto’s Clinic 2004 of the TV series.Kensuke Goto left Shoei University Hospital in Tokyo due to a medical error and moved to the remote island Shikinaji-ma. He devotes himself to local healthcare together with his partner Ayaka Hoshino, eventually earning the trust of the locals who call him “Dr. Coto.” Ayaka goes to Tokyo to acquire a physical therapist qualification, but her real purpose is to get a checkup at a university hospital. Mina Nakai comes to Shikina-jima to replace Ayaka, but she is not very popular among the locals because of her clumsiness. Then, Kensuke is informed by Ayaka’s physician, Kei Narumi, that she has breast cancer. Although it is a difficult situation for Kensuke, he continues to treat local patients with Mina and his other staff. Following the encouragement of Ayaka’s parents, Shoichi and Masayo, Kensuke goes to Tokyo to perform Ayaka’s operation.Dr. Coto’s Clinic 2006 aired on Fuji TV from October to December 2006 on Thursdays. The series focuses on the troubles of Kensuke and other locals revolving around the theme of cancer, while also depicting the growth of Mina and other characters. Yu Aoi played the new character Mina Nakai, while Masato Sakai played Kei Narumi. Noriko Yoshida won the 15th Hashida Award for screenplay. The series maintained a high audience rating throughout, achieving the highest ever first episode audience rating for a Fuji TV Thursday show, as well as recording the highest last episode audience rating among TV series that aired in 2006.The series was concluded in 2022 with a new movie version set 20 years after Goto first came to Shikina-jima as its doctor. Ryo Tomioka, who played Takehiro Hara, temporarily resumed his acting career just to appear in the movie.
