Dr. Koto Shinryojo, Dr. Coto’s ClinicKensuke Goto was a surgeon at Shoei University Hospital in Tokyo, but he quit due to a medical error. He moves to Shikina-jima, a remote island several hours away from Okinawa Island. However, all the island’s residents except Shoichi Hoshino, the manager of the Shikina Village Public Welfare Division, do not trust Kensuke at all because they believe that any doctor will soon leave the island. But Kensuke does not leave the island: he devotes himself to healthcare for the locals, such as successfully performing an acute appendicitis operation on his first patient, a boy named Takehiro Hara. This earns him the nickname “Dr. Coto.” Thanks to Kensuke’s medical skills and sincere personality, the locals gradually accept Kensuke as a person and as a doctor.Dr. Coto’s Clinic is the first of four seasons of the Dr. Coto TV series. Each season is based on a different story. This season revolves around Kensuke’s past and how he earns the trust of the people of Shikina-jima. Season one aired on Fuji TV from July to September 2003 on Thursdays, winning the top average audience rating and the highest audience rating among TV series broadcast in the term starting in July 2003. Furthermore, it won first prize in the 38th Television Drama Academy Awards, among many others. Kensuke was played by Hidetaka Yoshioka, who has played numerous characters such as Torajiro’s nephew, Mitsuo Suwa, in the Otoko wa Tsurai yo series. Yoshioka won the Best Actor Award in the 38th Television Drama Academy Awards.The TV series is based on a manga by Takatoshi Yamada that was serialized in Shogakukan’s manga magazine Weekly Young Sunday from 2000 and in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original from 2008. In 2004, the manga won the 49th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category.
