Synopsis

Nante Sutekini Japanesque (How Wonderfully Japanesque) The story is set in the Heian period and follows Princess Ruri, the 16-year-old daughter of a prestigious noble family in the capital of Kyoto. Bright and steadfast, Ruri had fixed opinions and took action in her own way, which was rare in an era where the typical marriageable age was thirteen or fourteen. Her father, embarrassed that she remained unmarried at that age, attempted to force her into an arranged marriage. However, she was rescued from this unwanted marriage by her childhood friend, Fujiwara no Takaakira. This incident led the two to become husband and wife, and eventually they became entangled in assassination plots targeting the Emperor and the Crown Prince. The original work was created by Saeko Himuro, a fiction writer for young girls. It began in 1981 as a girl’s novel series in Shosetsu Junior, written before she became a predominant writer in the Shogakukan’s Cobalt Bunko. The series was later adapted into a manga in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume. This original work is considered a pioneer of what are now called light novels. Because of its great popularity, a television drama adaptation aired on Nippon TV on December 27, 1986, while the series was still being published. Yasuko Tomita played the role of Princess Ruri, and the famous actor Koji Ishizaka made his directorial debut with this drama. The scripts were written by Hiroshi Matsuki, a long-standing associate of Ishizaka known for hits like Mizumore Kosuke and Ikenaka Genta 80kg. In the following year, January 1987, a 10-episode radio drama adaptation was also broadcast on NHK-FM’s Cafe Terrace no Futari (The Two on the Cafe Terrace) slot, starring Satomi Kobayashi as Ruri and Shinobu Sakagami as Takaakira. This work stands as an early hit of the media mix that started across many media including novels, manga, television, and radio. Sadly, the original writer passed away in 2008 at the age of 51.
