Synopsis
Umizaru2: Hono no Umi ni Idomu – Kaijohoankan Monogatari (Sea Monkeys: Challenging the Sea of Fire – The Story of Japan Coast Guard Officers)Daisuke Senzaki is a Japan Coast Guard officer serving at the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Kagoshima Prefecture. One day, while stationed onboard the patrol vessel Nagare, he receives an urgent message from his senior colleague, Naoki Ikezawa, and Ikezawa’s wife. The couple is on a ferry bound for Amami Oshima, but the ferry has been hijacked by an armed cash robbery couple. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Senzaki cuts short his inspection and hurriedly boards the ferry. However, he finds that Ikezawa has been shot while trying to stop the criminals and is unable to move. Furthermore, the gunfire has caused a fire, setting off panic on the ferry. Senzaki who rushed to the rescue, Ikezawa who cannot move anymore, and the female robber who tried to retrieve the money hidden in her car are left behind in the sinking ferry. In this emergency, Senzaki and the other two attempt a desperate escape. This production is a one-off drama consisting of two parts, aired on NHK on August 18, 2003, differing from the Umizaru produced by Fuji TV. Starring Taichi Kokubun, a member of the popular idol group Tokio, the drama sparked the Umizaru boom. Notably, the Japan Coast Guard cooperated with the filming of this drama, which resulted in the successful production of a more authentic maritime suspense drama. The story is based on the manga Umizaru, created by Shuho Sato with the draft and research for the story made by Yoichi Komori. The manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Young Sunday from December 1998 to June 2001. The series enjoyed a massive hit, surpassing 5 million copies in cumulative sales as of December 2014, and was adapted into many TV dramas and movies.
