Synopsis

Kaiki Daisakusen Sekando Fairu (Operation: Mystery - Second File)This work is a remake of the Kaiki Daisakusen (Operation: Mystery), produced by Tsuburaya Productions in 1968. Without featuring Kaiju or Ultraman, this tokusatsu (special effects) production focuses heavily on horror and mystery elements tailored to the era. Set in the post-2000s, it follows the members of the SRI (Science Research Institute), a special team formed to investigate and resolve incidents actively by identifying the causes. The SRI was previously an extension of the police structure, but in this Second File, it is a semi-public, semi-private organization. Consistent with the original series, a total of three new episodes dealing with strange phenomena that remain unexplained and relevant even today was produced, including Episode 1, Zeusu no Hikigane (Zeus's Trigger), which is about spontaneous human combustion where only the body ignites without a known source of fire; Episode 2, “ Showa Gento Koji (Showa Lantern Alley, where a mysterious electromagnetic wave causes time slips; and Episode 3, Hitokuiju (Cannibalistic Tree), which deals with an unknown infectious disease. The cast is entirely refreshed, starring Hidetoshi Nishijima, Naoki Tanaka, and Ittoku Kishibe, though the roles and character names remain the same as those in the original series. For the direction and series composition, Akio Jissoji was called from the original. While the original was produced by TBS, the Second File was produced by NHK and NHK Enterprises and aired from April to July 2007. The directors for the individual episodes include pioneers of Japanese horror who would be acclaimed internationally, such as Takashi Shimizu, the director of Ju-On (The Grudge), and Hideo Nakata, the director of Ring. The director Akio Jissoji passed away during the creation of this production.
