Synopsis
Manga Hajimete Monogatari, Manga Stories of BeginningsCombining live action, puppets, and animation, Manga Hajimete Monogatari [Manga Stories of Beginnings] is a show that explains to children in an easy-to-understand manner how ordinary, everyday things such as vehicles, lifelines, entertainment facilities, and electric appliances began and how they came to be a common part of modern life. A young female TV personality serves as the show’s host. A conversation begins between the host and a red tapir puppet called Mogutan on her shoulder, which leads to a question. The two say the magic words to switch to the animation part, and then they explain how all kinds of things began and developed. Midori Utsumi served as the first host, and Mayumi Oka as the second. It was jointly produced by DAX International and TBS as an educational show for kids. It was a long-running series, with 305 episodes airing between May 1978 and March 1984. It was the first show where live-action puppet tokusatsu was combined with animation. The show would always switch to the animation part with the long magical phrase, “Kurukurubabincho Papeppipo Hiyahiyadokkincho no Moogutan,” which became popular among children at the time.A standalone TV special titled 21 Seiki [21st Century] Manga Hajimete Monogatari was created and aired in 2001. It remains the longest-running animation show on TBS.While it was airing, it received a recommendation from the Ministry of Health and Welfare Central Children’s Council and won the Agency of Cultural Affairs’ Best TV Film for Children award.
