Synopsis
Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, Little WomenThe story is set during the American Civil War and revolves around the March family that lives in Gettysburg in north America. Frederic March has joined the Union Army, so his eldest daughter Meg, second daughter Jo, third daughter Beth, and fourth daughter Amy look after the house along with their mother Mary and their black housekeeper Hannah.However, after losing their house due to the war, the family heads to Newcord where the girls’ great-aunt Martha lives.Martha lets the family stay at her mansion for a while, but they manage to rent a new house for themselves thanks to the help of Anthony, a young man whom Jo gets to know.Then, Laurie, the grandson of Mr. Lawrence who lives next door to the Marches, comes to live with his grandfather. Laurie’s tutor Carl falls in love with Meg. Growing closer to those around them in their new life, each of the March sisters finds her future dream.In autumn of the following year, the family is informed that Frederic has been injured in battle and is in hospital. Mary immediately goes to visit her husband.Although the sisters are shocked, they manage to overcome the difficult situation with the help of Hannah and many others.Once the war ends, Frederic comes home with Mary, and the Marches begin a new life together.Later, Meg and Carl, as well as Amy and Laurie, get married, while Jo leaves for New York to pursue her dream of becoming a novelist.Little Women is based on the novel Little Women by the American writer Louisa May Alcott. Created by Nippon Animation as the 13th installment of the World Masterpiece Theater, it aired on the Fuji TV network in 1987.
