| Synopsis | Sarutobi Sasuke Japan entered a new age with Tokugawa Ieyasu’s victory in the Battle of Sekigahara and the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. Behind the scenes、 however、 a war is still going on between Ieyasu and Sanada Yukimura、 a military commander who was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara.Sarutobi Sasuke is a Koga ninja. Raised by Tozawa Hakuunsai、 the founder of Koga-ryu ninjutsu、 he has been training in Mt. Kudo. One day、 one of Sanada Yukimura’s vassals who is being hunted by Hattori Hanzo、 an Iga-ryu ninja、 moves into the Sanada residence at Mt. Kudo to conceal himself. As a friend of Yukimura、 Hakuunsai instructs Sasuke to serve him. However、 Sasuke refuses because he does not want to leave his master’s side. Then、 suddenly、 they are attacked by the Iga-ryu ninja Hattori Hanzo. Hakuunsai is killed、 leaving his final wishes before he dies. To honor Hakuunsai’s last words、 Sasuke offers to cooperate with Yukimura. He swears to defeat the Tokugawa family to avenge his master’s death. This marks the beginning of the struggle between the Sanada Ten Braves、 led by Sarutobi Sasuke、 and the Iga-ryu ninjas following Hattori Hanzo.Sarutobi Sasuke is a tokusatsu period drama that was broadcast on Nippon TV from May 11 to October 5、 1980. It ran for 17 episodes. The series garnered attention for its casting of Yosuke Tagawa、 a popular singer who was awarded in the 19th Japan Record Awards for “Lui-Lui、” as Sarutobi Sasuke. Tagawa also sang the ending theme song “Kokoro no Tsubasa.” Mayo Kawasaki、 who was similarly a popular singer at the time、 played Sanada Yukimura. Yoko Akino、 who appeared in Nippon TV’s Taiyo ni Hoero! and other TV series、 played the role of Hotaru、 a female ninja. The screenplay was written by Mamoru Sasaki、 a leading scriptwriter for tokusatsu TV series and animation series、 and also by James Miki、 who was later involved in NHK’s period dramas. |
